Lanny L. Johnson graduated from Royal Oak High School in 1951. He excelled in journalism in high school and was a member of the National Honor Society. He participated on the swimming teams and golf teams and achieved honors at the state level in both sports.

Dr. Johnson was an honors student at Michigan state University where he lettered in golf and swimming. He received his medical degree at Wayne State College of Medicine and served in the United States Air Force.

Lanny L. Johnson M. D., was one of the pioneers in arthroscopic surgery. He has published extensively on the topic and has registered forty patents with the U. S. Office of Patents. Many of the early patents were for surgical instrument and methods relating to bone surgery. He was an owner of a small surgical instrument company for over 20 years prior to selling the business to an international corporation.

Dr. Johnson served as a clinical professor at the College of Human Medicine at Michigan State University where he has earned international recognition in orthopedic surgery. He has recently developed procedures that will help those with knee arthritis.

While he is well known as a surgeon, writer, teacher and inventor, Lanny Johnson has also quietly and privately aided many people financially and with his gifted services. Dr. Johnson was inducted into the Royal Oak High School Hall of Fame in 1997.
